Message from the Treasurer

Dear Adjunct Faculty,

As this calendar year is passing us by, the Officers of the Essex County Chapter want to inform you of 3 insurance programs we are bringing to you, as Full Members, at no additional charge.

1. New Members Only—$12,000 of Term Life and AD&D at no cost for one year!

New AFT members are entitled to $12,000 of life insurance protection for one year at absolutely no cost. This plan also provides for payment of an additional $12,000 in the event of a member's death as a result of an accident.

Members qualify for this outstanding benefit as long as they are new AFT members and actively working. Members must complete, sign and return an activation form to be eligible for this valuable coverage. The coverage will become effective on the first day of the month after the completed and signed activation form is received by FPA, the AFT + insurance administrator.

New members may also enroll in additional coverage without a Statement of Health within 12 months of joining AFT as long has you have not been hospitalized or treated for any condition within the prior 90 days and are considered to be an active employee.

2. Local Union Paid Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D)

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) at the benefit level of  $10,000. Not every local union participates in this national program!

The coverage is designed to pay benefits to insured members from a participating local that die as a result of an accident or who suffer the loss of a hand, leg or similar serious injury. Benefits are paid directly to the member. In the case of accidental death, benefits are paid to the member’s beneficiary (the beneficiary card should be on file at the local). Call AFT + at 800/238-1133, ext. 8643.

3. AFT Occupational Liability Insurance Plan and Legal Action Trust

All individual members in good standing are covered under the AFT Occupational Liability Plan for their professional employment activities.

This valuable coverage is not available to individual members. It is an optional coverage through AFT that an AFT local elects to provide for its members.

There are two components to this important protection for AFT members: the AFT Occupational Liability Insurance Plan and Legal Action Trust.  These two parts provide protection for claims arising out of the professional employment activities of an insured AFT member.

Part 1: The Occupational Liability Insurance Policy provides coverage up to $1 million of protection for each member for bodily injury and property damage and $1 million per member for personal injury with a $3 million annual aggregate. The policy provides coverage for most of the claims activity involving employment activities.

Part 2: The AFT has established a special Legal Action Trust, which may provide reimbursement protection for other exposures. The trust has a $1 million per occurrence limit and an annual aggregate limit of $1 million.

By combining the insurance policy with the Legal Action Trust, members receive broad protection.

Although we were not prepared to offer these programs until we had completed a full calendar year, (officially we are only 9 months old) we felt the need to provide our full members with as many benefits as possible, in as short a time as possible.

After the New Year, we will list all the additional benefits available to all AFT members.

To our entire Essex County College families, have a safe, happy, prosperous and most importantly a healthy holiday season and New Year.

Lynne, John and Mark
